were present in Western Europe from the Oligocene to the early Miocene (MN3). Like the
<taxonomicName authorityName="Frick" authorityYear="1926" class="Mammalia" family="Ursidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Carnivora" pageId="13" pageNumber="612" phylum="Chordata" rank="subFamily" subFamily="Hemicyoninae">Hemicyoninae</taxonomicName>
as a whole, they are considered to be pursuit predators with a canid-like way of life (

. The genus is common from the late Oligocene to the lower Miocene, with several species but is less common in the early Oligocene. Nevertheless,
