.HewasthescientificmanageroftheAgencedesAiresMarines Protégées (today, French Biodiversity Agency) and devoted most of his energy to the deployment of oceanographic cruises designed to improve knowledge of marine biodiversity, particularly in underwater caves and the deep sea. He initiated the Pakaihi i te Moana programme in the
