The
<emphasis id="B90A3D30FFCCE415FCE752CA72E9FBC3" box="[849,917,936,960]" italics="true" pageId="45" pageNumber="46">rictalis</emphasis>
originates in the preopercle, sympletic, quadrate and hyomandibula. The lateralmost fibers of the ventral portion of the
<emphasis id="B90A3D30FFCCE415FAE652AC74E8FBE5" box="[1360,1428,974,998]" italics="true" pageId="45" pageNumber="46">rictalis</emphasis>
is restricted to the anterior margin of the preopercular fossa. That section inserts solely on the coronoid process, with some lateralmost fibers associated with the buccopalatal membrane and transverse ligament. The
<emphasis id="B90A3D30FFCCE415FC50555C754CFC55" box="[998,1072,1086,1110]" italics="true" pageId="45" pageNumber="46">stegalis</emphasis>
arises from the hyomandibula, metapterygoid, and quadrate; and converges into the meckelian tendon which, in turn, inserts on the coronomeckelian bone, with some anterodorsal fibers converging to the mandibular tendon.

arises from the mandibular tendon, enters the mandible mesially and inserts on the anguloarticular and dentary. The
<emphasis id="B90A3D30FFCCE415FB2E559B74E7FD13" box="[1176,1435,1272,1296]" italics="true" pageId="45" pageNumber="46">segmentum mandibularis</emphasis>
is located dorsally to Meckels cartilage, extending about 40% of the dorsal portion of this cartilage. The course of the
<emphasis id="B90A3D30FFCCE415FC9154267510FD58" box="[807,1132,1347,1371]" italics="true" pageId="45" pageNumber="46">ramus mandibularis trigeminus</emphasis>
nerve is lateral to the
<emphasis id="B90A3D30FFCCE415FADC542174C8FD58" box="[1386,1460,1347,1371]" italics="true" pageId="45" pageNumber="46">stegalis</emphasis>
and mesial to the
<emphasis id="B90A3D30FFCCE415FD1A540A738CFD83" box="[684,752,1384,1408]" italics="true" pageId="45" pageNumber="46">rictalis</emphasis>
and
<emphasis id="B90A3D30FFCCE415FC9E540A7208FD83" box="[808,884,1384,1408]" italics="true" pageId="45" pageNumber="46">malaris</emphasis>
.

The

has a triangular shape, originating from the sphenotic and inserting in the hyomandibula (

). The relative size of origin is equal to a half of its insertion. At the insertion point, the anterolateral, anteromesial and posterolateral fibers are lateral to the
<emphasis id="B90A3D30FFCCE415FBFC574175EAFE38" box="[1098,1174,1571,1595]" italics="true" pageId="45" pageNumber="46">malaris</emphasis>
; while and posteromesial fibers are mesial to the latter. The posterodorsal fibers of the
<emphasis id="B90A3D30FFCCE415FB1C572A74F4FE63" box="[1194,1416,1608,1632]" italics="true" pageId="45" pageNumber="46">levator arcus palatini</emphasis>
are parallel to the
<emphasis id="B90A3D30FFCCE415FD30570C724AFE85" box="[646,822,1646,1670]" italics="true" pageId="45" pageNumber="46">dilatator operculi</emphasis>
, with no overlap between the two muscles.
