The new genus and species differs from all members of the
<taxonomicName family="Loricariidae" lsidName="" pageId="3" pageNumber="132" rank="family">Loricariidae</taxonomicName>
by having (1) three hypertrophied bicuspid odontodes on the lateral portion of the body (character apparently present only in mature males - observed in the
<typeStatus>holotype</typeStatus>
, but not present in the
<typeStatus>paratypes</typeStatus>
) (Fig. 2a, b); and differs from all members of the
<taxonomicName lsidName="" pageId="3" pageNumber="132" rank="subfamily" subfamily="Neoplecostominae">Neoplecostominae</taxonomicName>
by having (2) a large area without odontodes around the snout, observed in all specimens, Fig. 3 (vs. margin of snout bearing odontodes); and from all members of the
<taxonomicName lsidName="" pageId="3" pageNumber="132" rank="subfamily" subfamily="Neoplecostominae">Neoplecostominae</taxonomicName>
, except

The generic name is a combination of Greek, micro (
<normalizedToken originalValue="mikrós">mikros</normalizedToken>
) = small, related to the small size of the adult type-specimen, and
<taxonomicName lsidName="plecostomus" pageId="4" pageNumber="133" rank="species" species="plecostomus">plecostomus</taxonomicName>
= a former generic name of species currently included in
<taxonomicName family="Loricariidae" lsidName="" pageId="4" pageNumber="133" rank="family">Loricariidae</taxonomicName>
, also in reference to the small adult size of the type-species. A masculine name.
