As presently circumscribed, the genus

is clearly characterised by the following combination of characters: obligate coprophilous ecology, eugymnohymenial
|
|

development, apothecia with reduced marginal tissue without setose hairs; inamyloid asci uniformly stainable in CR, with functional operculum; prolate, smooth (under transmission light microscope), eguttulate ascospores in all developmental stages sporoplasm of which have strong affinities to form de Bary bubble in any anhydrous conditions (especially in media such Cotton Blue). Mature spores ejected from living asci possess temporary thick and gelatinous sheath. Anamorph not known.
