are relatively diverse, but a typical adult female pit scale usually lives in a depression or pit in the hosts surface and secretes a dorsal translucent waxy test whose margins are attached tightly to the substrate except for a small section at the rear, where crawlers may escape. The test (usually round / oval / ellipsoidal / oblong or elongate-oblong) is often yellow or green and frequently has a fringe of pale filaments around the margin. The saclike body of the insect lacks visible segmentation.

Slide-mounted adult female body nearly circular, posterior end slightly produced. Antennae unsegmented, each bearing 2 spine-like setae, each slightly longer than diameter of antenna, and 2 small hair-like setae. Anal opening apparently ventral, situated on body surface rather close to margin, nearly circular, with margin slightly sclerotized, normally bearing 2 setae.

The live adult female secretes a large ovisac, which protrudes from the rear end of the insect. Slide-mounted, body lacking stigmatic clefts. Dorsal and marginal setae spinose. Stigmatic setae, if present, reduced to a single small seta on margin at outer end of each spiracular furrow. Anal cleft fairly short. Multilocular disc-pores numerous around anogenital fold. Ventral tubular ducts of

Long pregenital setae absent from abdominal segments anterior to anogenital fold. Dorsal and ventral tubular ducts extremely large. Legs well developed, tibia and tarsus freely articulated, each with tibio-tarsal sclerosis; claw digitules slender, with apical knob very small. Anal cleft very short.Anal plates each elongate triangular and bearing 3 setae.
