Sternite VIII (Fig. 6) partially covering subgenital plates; in ventral view, trapezoidal; 1.5 times wider than long; posterolateral angles rounded; posterior margin slightly excavated. Valve (Fig. 7), in ventral view, three times wider than long; integument thickened only on anterior margin; posterior margin deeply excavated medially. Pygofer (Fig. 8), in lateral view, elongate and narrow; about three times longer than maximum height; apex tapered, subacute; macrosetae dispersed only at apex and posterior margin. Subgenital plate, in lateral view (Fig. 8), not produced posteriorly as far as pygofer apex; in ventral view (Fig. 9), 3.3 times longer than wide, apical half wider than base; ventral surface with small setae near external margin; lateral margins divergent toward apex; external margin slightly rounded; internal margin excavated at mid-length; apex abruptly subacute. Connective (Fig. 10) Y-shaped; approximately one-third as long as style; stalk longer than wide. Style, in dorsal view (Fig. 10), with outer lobe well-developed with microsetae; in lateral view (Fig. 11), apical half with long microsetae; ventral margin serrated pre-apically; apex curved dorsally and rounded, with elongate and acute apical process directed mesad. Aedeagus (Figs 12, 13) with preatrium reduced; dorsal apodeme developed dorsally, flattened and rounded; shaft elongated and flattened dorsoventrally, with pair of short apical processes, bent ventrally.

Pygofer (Fig. 19) elongate and narrow; about 2.8 times longer than maximum height; apex truncate; macrosetae dispersed near apex and microsetae near ventral margin. First valvifer (Fig. 20) 1.5 times higher than long; anterior angle rounded; anterior margin slightly excavated; dorsal and posterior margins straight. First valvula (Fig. 20) slightly curved dorsally; about 7.5 times longer than high; with approximately same height along entire length; apex (Fig. 21) with dorsal sculptured area strigate, ventroapical margin areolate; apex acute. Second valvula (Fig. 22) approximately four times longer than maximum height; apical portion (Fig. 23) dorsal and ventroapical margins with minute and uniform denticles; apex tapered and acute. Third valvula (Fig. 19) 3.5 times longer than high; ventral margin with only short setae; apex acute.

) with anterior margin rounded; pair of conspicuous and sinuous longitudinal carinae located between median line and ocelli; texture with inconspicuous irregular striae and punctations; dorsal surface concave between carinae and between each carina and lateral margin. Ocellus small, closer to median line than eye and to posterior than anterior margin of crown. Head (Fig. 25), in ventral view, with face higher than wide, anterior portion, below crown margin, expanded laterally and with median longitudinal keel; gena excavated just below eyes, ventrolateral margin slightly excavated; frons approximately 2.4 times longer than maximum width, lateral margin distant from eye by maximum width of clypeus; frontogenal suture reaching anterior margin of crown; antennal ledge vertical and continuous to lateral margin of crown; antennal insertion anterior to eye anterior margin; maxillary plate very narrow, not produced ventrally as far as clypeus apex; clypeus approximately 1.7 times longer than wide, lateral margin slightly convergent apically, apex emarginated. Forewing (Fig. 27) with venation distinct; clavus densely punctate with some veinlets; corium with veinlets on costal margin and brachial cell; apical cells short; appendix very narrow, bordering first and second apical cells; apex subquadrangular. Hind wing (Fig. 28) with short r-m and m-cu; apex subquadrangular. Profemur elongated, 4.0 times longer than high; AV row formed by four or five setae restricted to basal half; PV row formed by seven or eight setae; intercalary row formed by thick and sparse setae. Protibia, in cross-section, triangular; dorsal surface flattened and carinate laterally, without setae; ventral surface with some short setae near apex; AV row formed by short setae, gradually increasing in thickness and length toward apex; PD row with six short setae restricted to apical fourth; PV row developed, with about seven very short setae and two longer and thicker setae in the distal portion. Hind leg with femoral setal formula 2:2:1; tibial AD row without intercalary setae between macrosetae, PV row with setae of apical half thick, homogeneous in length and thickness; first tarsomere with inner row one row of setae on plantar surface absent, external row with seven short and thick setae, with cuculate bases, apex with five platellae; second tarsomere apex with three apical platellae.

Ocellus small, closer to median line than eye and to posterior than anterior margin of crown. Sternite VIII (Fig. 29) rectangular; longer than wide; lateral margins slightly convex; posterolateral angles rounded, posterior margin slightly sinuate with small median emargination. Valve (Fig. 30), in ventral view, subtriangular; 1.9 times longer than wide; integument thickening present only on anterior margin; posterior margin produced and emarginated. Pygofer (Fig. 31), in lateral view, about 2.2 times longer than maximum height; dorsal margin convex; ventral margin strongly convex near base and concave subapically; macrosetae grouped near dorsal margin subapically; with robust and unciform inner processes, directed ventrally, in dorsal view (Fig. 32), with apex rounded; apex tapered, subacute. Subgenital plate, in lateral view (Fig. 31), not produced posteriorly as far as pygofer apex; in ventral view (Fig. 33), 2.6 times longer than wide, wider at midlength, with small setae on external margin; external margin expanded laterally; internal margin straight; apex tapered and subacute. Connective (Fig. 34) small, Y-shaped; stalk longer than wide; about one-quarter of style length. Style, in dorsal view (Fig. 34), with outer lobe reduced; in lateral view (Fig. 35), L-shaped, with blade elongate; ventral margin smooth, wider preapically, with short and robust preapical tooth, directed anterad; dorsal margin excavated preapically; apex emarginated. Aedeagus (Figs 36, 37) with preatrium reduced; dorsal apodeme not produced laterally, with pair of processes parallel to shaft, extending beyond shaft apex, each process with ventral margin with prominent rounded lobe and apex acute; shaft elongated and strongly curved dorsally; apex with two pairs of short apical processes, one pair directed dorsally and another ventrally.

is unique in the

species group by possessing the longest malar space of all species combined with a large and mainly rectangular and central black spot on the clypeus in females. In addition, the dorsal side of the flagellum is often slightly darkened. However, especially females can be confused with
<taxonomicName lsidName="P. gallicus" pageId="37" pageNumber="90" rank="species" species="gallicus">P. gallicus</taxonomicName>
in the transition zone of both species (N Italy to Balkans), because the latter rarely has an extreme long malar space (some genetically examined specimens from the Italian Alps). The flagellum is completely reddish in
<taxonomicName lsidName="P. gallicus" pageId="37" pageNumber="90" rank="species" species="gallicus">P. gallicus</taxonomicName>
, but always darkened dorsally in alpine

. The yellow spots on the mesoscutum are usually lacking in smaller specimens from Croatia and Italy. The male is variable in colour pattern; the mesoscutum is black or has a pair of large yellow spots and the base of tergite II is either black or largely yellow.
