was first reported from Switzerland by
<bibRefCitation author="Lettau, G" journalOrPublisher="Feddes Repertorium" pageId="6" pageNumber="7" pagination="1 - 97" title="Flechten aus Mitteleuropa XI." volume="59" year="1956">Lettau (1956)</bibRefCitation>
but remained overlooked until it was collected several times within the framework of the Red List project. The species was described in detail in

based on North American material. It is unusual, but not unique, for a
<taxonomicName class="Candelariomycetes" family="Candelariaceae" genus="Candelariella" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Fungi" lsidName="Candelariella" order="Candelariales" pageId="4" pageNumber="5" phylum="Ascomycota" rank="genus">Candelariella</taxonomicName>
in having biatorine apothecia (Fig. 6). North American populations typically have a thallus composed of grey, shiny squamules. The material from Europe and North Africa, seen during this study has an inconspicuous grey thallus that is indistinct, granular or composed of scattered, grey, narrow and incised squamules. This is a rare species but easily overlooked as the apothecia are small, mostly c. 0.2-0.4 mm wide. It is known in Europe from Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. The distribution within Switzerland is distinctly southern.
