This subspecies was named in honor of James A. Fowler, who, with Charles OBrien, arranged the AMNH

specimens in taxonomic order and made a card for each taxon, giving specimen data and a reference to each description. This preliminary work has greatly facilitated all subsequent work on the

. At the time, Fowler was a graduate student in the Dept. of Biology at Columbia University.
