The genus name is formed from a combination of Latin

, meaning “unadorned” because of the simple morphology of members of this genus, and “

,” a common root in other genus names in this tribe.

The single species in the genus is known only from a few localities in the upper Orinoco basin of

near the town of Puerto Ayacucho where it is hygropetric (
