Described originally from Australia, with the synonym sakimurai from Oahu by

, this species is widespread throughout the tropics, and has been referred to frequently as 
<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Phlaeothripidae" genus="Antillothrips" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Antillothrips cingulata" order="Thysanoptera" pageId="3" pageNumber="82" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="cingulata">Antillothrips cingulata</taxonomicName>
. It is sometimes abundant, living in association with the leaves of tussocks of grass, but adults disperse and alight on other plants, and on Oahu have been recorded from lettuce leaves. The species is similar in size and colour to 
<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Phlaeothripidae" genus="Karnyothrips" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Karnyothrips melaleucus" order="Thysanoptera" pageId="3" pageNumber="82" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="melaleucus">Karnyothrips melaleucus</taxonomicName>
, with the head, thorax and abdominal apex dark brown but abdominal segments

yellow. However, the maxillary stylets are short and restricted to the mouth cone (Fig. 3), and the prosternal basantra are only faintly indicated, whereas these prosternal sclerites are large in

species (cf Figs 8-10). The male remains unknown, and the genus is not regarded as a member of the
