Based on both molecular data and morphology, we place the taxa

and
<taxonomicName id="80DE967CDE875C7A0894D1DE2E92BE33" lsidName="X. chinensis" pageId="0" pageNumber="97" rank="species" species="chinensis">X. chinensis</taxonomicName>
in synonymy under
<taxonomicName id="E93D6F172CE8E31687DDE73C9BD6DCF7" lsidName="X. spathulatus" pageId="0" pageNumber="97" rank="species" species="spathulatus">X. spathulatus</taxonomicName>
. In our phylogenetic analysis of ITS sequence data, the recently described
<taxonomicName id="684021615B54E6B7F84173C20CBBE9DC" lsidName="X. bubalinus" pageId="0" pageNumber="97" rank="species" species="bubalinus">X. bubalinus</taxonomicName>
(4 collections) and
<taxonomicName id="E54513551A3372918C6A0205C4E63A9B" lsidName="X. chinensis" pageId="0" pageNumber="97" rank="species" species="chinensis">X. chinensis</taxonomicName>
(2 collections) from China form a well-supported clade with
<taxonomicName id="82079B1586E8F972A134D0FC02512DE6" lsidName="X. spathulatus" pageId="0" pageNumber="97" rank="species" species="spathulatus">X. spathulatus</taxonomicName>
(4 collections) from Europe (97 BS, 1 PP) that is sister to
<taxonomicName id="787DEE05ED871E0169AE795D910600D7" lsidName="X. apacheriensis" pageId="0" pageNumber="97" rank="species" species="apacheriensis">X. apacheriensis</taxonomicName>
(Fig. 1). Within this clade are several subclades, with very low bootstrap support (&lt;55), thus subspecies or varieties cannot be identified. The 28S rRNA gene analysis also supports conspecificity between
<taxonomicName id="23B835EBF0CB6E52B091E794D78D2E31" lsidName="X. chinensis" pageId="0" pageNumber="97" rank="species" species="chinensis">X. chinensis</taxonomicName>
and
<taxonomicName id="E2AC9329B73649D13E2E5149DB0D6E79" lsidName="X. spathulatus" pageId="0" pageNumber="97" rank="species" species="spathulatus">X. spathulatus</taxonomicName>
(99 BS, 0.65 PP) (Fig. 2).
<taxonomicName id="C3F1130EFC696880B1C50D7CFA21AFDE" class="Agaricomycetes" family="Schizoporaceae" genus="Xylodon" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Fungi" lsidName="Xylodon spathulatus" order="Hymenochaetales" pageId="0" pageNumber="97" phylum="Basidiomycota" rank="species" species="spathulatus">Xylodon spathulatus</taxonomicName>
has three main diagnostic features: prominent (1-2 mm tall) aculei of varied shape, numerous apically acute cystidia with 1-4 slight constrictions and capitate cystidia with a resinous cap. It is described and illustrated by
<bibRefCitation id="2978E13425B0BA83DD5D76365D639CFC" pageId="0" pageNumber="97">Eriksson and Ryvarden (1976)</bibRefCitation>
and
<bibRefCitation id="A4B023A411DEE792211A225F94F4D545" pageId="0" pageNumber="97">Langer (1994)</bibRefCitation>
. Minor morphological variation amongst the three taxa was observed. For example,
<taxonomicName id="8579DF8653127ECC9ADD3C8D1A245B81" lsidName="X. chinensis" pageId="0" pageNumber="97" rank="species" species="chinensis">X. chinensis</taxonomicName>
has ventricose cystidia, similar to those in
<taxonomicName id="3D63D748A4CF0574C0C9D71E52AA7465" lsidName="X. spathulatus" pageId="0" pageNumber="97" rank="species" species="spathulatus">X. spathulatus</taxonomicName>
, but they are sometimes septate at the constrictions. Distinctly ventricose cystidia were not observed in
<taxonomicName id="F25EA497C7828CBA9922D0214F9F0B88" lsidName="X. bubalinus" pageId="0" pageNumber="97" rank="species" species="bubalinus">X. bubalinus</taxonomicName>
, which instead had hyphoid or subulate cystidioles (

, Fig. 2f). Encrusted hyphal ends at apices of the aculei in
<taxonomicName id="699D6D0F23505F28417F543C630A7CB3" lsidName="X. bubalinus" pageId="0" pageNumber="97" rank="species" species="bubalinus">X. bubalinus</taxonomicName>
and
<taxonomicName id="6218C7C7026CAA146335B730FC1208A9" lsidName="X. chinensis" pageId="0" pageNumber="97" rank="species" species="chinensis">X. chinensis</taxonomicName>
are typical of those in
<taxonomicName id="9E50380026746950E26F1BE3EF5E9ED8" lsidName="X. spathulatus" pageId="0" pageNumber="97" rank="species" species="spathulatus">X. spathulatus</taxonomicName>
. Resinous caps enclosing capitate elements are often absent as in the case of
<taxonomicName id="197044B6D2B0236E9BAF43658790093A" lsidName="X. bubalinus" pageId="0" pageNumber="97" rank="species" species="bubalinus">X. bubalinus</taxonomicName>
,

is modified to include variable aculei from conical and subulate to distinctly spathuliform and the variable presence of cystidia with resinous caps, mucronate apices and a submoniliform type that are aseptate with more or less blunt apices. Thus

is a highly variable but distinctive species that is widely distributed from northern Europe (

) to southern China (
