Schaeffer, 1904: 197. Type locality: &quot;Tulare Co[unty], California&quot; (original citation). Syntype(s) [4 originally cited] location unknown. Etymology. The specific name was proposed for Ottomar Dietz [1854-1901], an enthusiastic beetle collector. Born in Germany, Dietz moved to America in his 20s, living in Milwaukee and Cincinnati before settling in New York where he was engaged in the newspaper advertising business. He was a founding member of the New York Entomological Society.
