Distinguished from other latid genera by the following combination of characters: scales on smooth horizontal limb of the preopercle; nostrils widely separated on each side of the head, anterior nostril a tube-shaped flap and posterior nostril oval and greatly enlarged; large observable scales on posterior part of maxilla (
