CITES Appendix I. Classified as Data Deficient on The [UCN Red List. However, at the [IUCN/SSC Lemur Red-Listing Workshop held in July 2012, L. ottowas assessed as endangered. The Ambodimahabibo Sportive Lemur is not known to occur in any official protected areas but is found in the Ambodimahabibo Classified Forest, which provides some protection. Surveys are required in the heavily deforested region that it inhabits to obtain additional information about the location and viability of other remaining populations, so that conservation measures can be proposed.
