This species was believed to be restricted to drainage systems of the northern Black Sea coast (even though the Oskol River lies far from the Black Sea coast), but unpublished molecular data suggest it may be distributed as far north as the eastern part of the Baltic Sea and as far south as Anatolia (AFS, unpublished data).</paragraph>

<taxonomicName class="Gastropoda" family="Neritidae" genus="Theodoxus" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Theodoxus velox" order="Cycloneritida" pageId="32" pageNumber="63" phylum="Mollusca" rank="species" species="velox">Theodoxus velox</taxonomicName>
is indeed challenging to differentiate from some regional morphotypes of that species given the overlap in shell patterns. Unpublished molecular data indicate however that
<taxonomicName lsidName="T. velox" pageId="32" pageNumber="63" rank="species" species="velox">T. velox</taxonomicName>
belongs to a different molecular clade (AFS, unpublished data). The distribution range of that clade overlaps with the range of
<taxonomicName lsidName="T. sarmaticus" pageId="32" pageNumber="63" rank="species" species="sarmaticus">T. sarmaticus</taxonomicName>
(Lindholm, 1901), which is widely accepted as a junior synonym of
<taxonomicName lsidName="T. fluviatilis" pageId="32" pageNumber="63" rank="species" species="fluviatilis">T. fluviatilis</taxonomicName>
in the literature (e.g.,
