Considering it´s relatively slender body and the low number of gill rakers on the lower limb of the first branchial arch,

(9-10 rakers) is similar to
<taxonomicName id="E9CB32C45D0DB830F8F9F3A075D84383" LSID-ZBK="urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:C4F7C0B3-61FC-4FE2-8FAF-FA4A668D13DC" family="Cichlidae" genus="Chromidotilapia" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName-ZBK="Chromidotilapia mrac Lamboj 2002:251" order="Perciformes" pageNumber="10" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="mrac">C. mrac</taxonomicName>
(8-9 rakers), but differs from the latter species in a poorly developed sexual dimorphism and dichromatism as well as in breeding behaviour (ovophilic in the former vs. larvophilic mouthbrooder in the latter). However, both exhibit a characteristic pattern of two rows of dark spots and blotches on the flanks, a feature which is not evident in other species within the genus.
