We examined one specimen from Spain labelled as follows: &quot;P. Leon Las

, 4,875 10.v-12.vi.1967 I &amp; E Yarrow BM 1967-352&quot; (OLML), which agrees with
<taxonomicName id="0041E6FF1886C6BD45E483CDB2AEDCA3" lsidName="A. allosa" pageId="4" pageNumber="15" rank="species" species="allosa">A. allosa</taxonomicName>
in the sculpture of the terga and in its vestiture, but which has a shorter malar space, the clypeus that is not flattened apically as well as shorter mouthparts. This specimen appears to be superficially similar to the sequenced female collected at Larrau, in the
<normalizedToken id="BD53B87EA1E25C304A7638D67CE2A594" originalValue="“Pyrenées">&quot;Pyrenees</normalizedToken>
Atlantiques&quot; department in France (number 1293; Fig. 1), which was 0.73% divergent from Alpine specimens of
<taxonomicName id="2F8593739DA06B8D94D02E86D9F1C38B" lsidName="A. allosa" pageId="4" pageNumber="15" rank="species" species="allosa">A. allosa</taxonomicName>
. For now, we consider these two specimens to belong to
<taxonomicName id="BF160882F2855901809F26D30397D54C" lsidName="A. allosa" pageId="4" pageNumber="15" rank="species" species="allosa">A. allosa</taxonomicName>
in spite of the lack of the most conspicuous diagnostic characters of this species, namely the long malar space and the flattened clypeus.

We found

in various subalpine and alpine grasslands from 1370 m to slightly above the tree line at around 2100 m (Fig. 4), often in close proximity to stands of
<taxonomicName id="61C88E79A4804B9263A5ADE4430FD346" class="Liliopsida" family="Iridaceae" genus="Crocus" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Plantae" lsidName="Crocus albiflorus" order="Asparagales" pageId="4" pageNumber="15" phylum="Tracheophyta" rank="species" species="albiflorus">Crocus albiflorus</taxonomicName>
(Fig. 9). Nesting sites are unknown.

collected the pollen on eight plant families (Table 3) but had a pronounced affinity for the pollen of

), which contributed 62.4% to the total pollen grain volume and was recorded in 20 out of 24 scopal loads. This finding is supported by field observations at five different localities in the Swiss and French Alps, where several females of
<taxonomicName id="C25BABBE72815DE815B852BA8592D93B" lsidName="A. allosa" pageId="4" pageNumber="15" rank="species" species="allosa">A. allosa</taxonomicName>
simultaneously harvested pollen on
<taxonomicName id="3EB4095FC4D37900C7AA57354ECED536" class="Liliopsida" family="Iridaceae" genus="Crocus" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Plantae" lsidName="Crocus" order="Asparagales" pageId="4" pageNumber="15" phylum="Tracheophyta" rank="genus">Crocus</taxonomicName>
(Fig. 14). Numerous females were observed to collect the pollen from
<taxonomicName id="A0F69365A030AA72830F1BC5B3D9A9AD" class="Liliopsida" family="Iridaceae" genus="Crocus" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Plantae" lsidName="Crocus" order="Asparagales" pageId="4" pageNumber="15" phylum="Tracheophyta" rank="genus">Crocus</taxonomicName>
flowers late in the season, at a time when blooming

were restricted to small patches where snow had remained particularly long. Because of the particularly short blooming period of

, this observation suggests that

females may locate short-lived stands of

throughout their flying season.
