A medium­ to large­sized species, characterized by the strongly melanic pattern of the dorsal surface of the male, the female being much less melanic. General shape of both wings very rounded, with smooth apex of FW and rounded anal lobe of HW. FW discal band (both dorsally and ventrally) with a concave outer margin (all other related species with a straight or convex outer border). Both subspecies exhibit a stable wing pattern, though specimens of ssp.
