The genus was established with the description of its type-species [

<taxonomicNameLabel id="0F6B953C48CE2B4286304C98454B3884" pageId="57" pageNumber="130" rank="species">sp. n.</taxonomicNameLabel>
] and subsequently as subgenus, it was placed in the genus
<taxonomicName id="3DA08A4FCCBDAC5D4EF64D22351B51FD" class="Arachnida" family="Carabodidae" genus="Carabodes" kingdom="Animalia" order="Sarcoptiformes" pageId="57" pageNumber="130" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="genus">Carabodes</taxonomicName>
C. L. Koch, 1836 by Berlese (1913). Later Balogh (1961, 1965, 1972) also put it in the family

. Balogh and Mahunka (1966) without examining the holotype of the nominate subspecies described a new subspecies from
<collectingCountry id="D98A59FE01ECE6DC3EF7D4AA3C6D3FE9">South Africa</collectingCountry>
, but they did not discuss the proper place of the genus.

my present work I had to deal with this question, and on the ground of the examination of the type material of
<taxonomicName id="CD6E7170C4E98D7DE75480393174D3D0" class="Arachnida" family="Carabocepheidae" genus="Carabocepheus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Sarcoptiformes" pageId="58" pageNumber="131" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="subSpecies" species="lounsburyi" subGenus="" subGenus.completionEvidence="missing, matching species" subGenus.innerRound="1" subGenus.outerRound="1" subSpecies="latior">Carabocepheus lounsburyi latior</taxonomicName>
Balogh et Mahunka, 1966 and of the newly collected material (S. Endrodi and S.
<normalizedToken id="4467033AC07865E7D508071A97D34AF9" originalValue="Endrödy-Younga" pageId="58" pageNumber="131">Endroedy-Younga</normalizedToken>
of Pretoria) I obtained the following results.

The genus is well distinguished from all other

genera and belongs to the relationship of the superfamily
<taxonomicName id="1A5D748D287CCA3FF236502D79F2DE11" pageId="58" pageNumber="131" rank="superFamily" superFamily="Otocepheoidea">Otocepheoidea</taxonomicName>
Balogh, 1961. In my opinion it may not be ranged among the known families therefore, I propose a new family:
