The area where the palm grows has extensive forests for many kilometres on both sides of the Colombia-Panama border, and the palm was locally abundant, with hundreds of adults and plants in all size categories. No major imminent threats appear to be operating in the area, although selective logging does take place, and the zone is dangerously close to the Urabá region, one of the most severely deforested areas of
