These beetles occur in the emergent zone of sun-warmed permanent or semi-permanent ponds in forested area (

). In Prince Edward Island,
<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Dytiscidae" genus="Acilius" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Acilius sylvanus" order="Coleoptera" pageId="5" pageNumber="108" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="sylvanus">Acilius sylvanus</taxonomicName>
was collected in a permanent pond on clay bottom located at the edge of a spruce and aspen forest (Tables 1).

This species is known only from the neighboring Province of New Brunswick (

). The presence of
