After the restrictions imposed at the family level, the genus
<taxonomicName class="Gastropoda" family="Flabellinidae" genus="Flabellina" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Flabellina" order="Nudibranchia" pageId="46" pageNumber="47" phylum="Mollusca" rank="genus">Flabellina</taxonomicName>
(to which morphologically and molecularly extremely disparate taxa were formerly assigned) is thus returned to its original definition (Gray 1833 in
<bibRefCitation pageId="46" pageNumber="47">Griffith and Pidgeon 1833-1834</bibRefCitation>
). It is characterised by very ramified tall ceratal stalks and a relatively long vas deferens. In our molecular analysis, the type species of the genus
<taxonomicName class="Gastropoda" family="Flabellinidae" genus="Flabellina" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Flabellina affinis" order="Nudibranchia" pageId="46" pageNumber="47" phylum="Mollusca" rank="species" species="affinis">Flabellina affinis</taxonomicName>
was placed basally and separate from the morphologically similar
<taxonomicName lsidName="F. funeka" pageId="46" pageNumber="47" rank="species" species="funeka">F. funeka</taxonomicName>
and
<taxonomicName lsidName="F. ischitana" pageId="46" pageNumber="47" rank="species" species="ischitana">F. ischitana</taxonomicName>
. Further complicating this case is the position of the genus
<taxonomicName class="Gastropoda" family="Flabellinidae" genus="Calmella" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Calmella" order="Nudibranchia" pageId="46" pageNumber="47" phylum="Mollusca" rank="genus">Calmella</taxonomicName>
which may be more closely related to

and

rather than to

. Thus, to keep the genus
