(1823b) in the catalogue of duplicate specimens from the collections of the Zoological Museum of Berlin (ZMB, now Museum für Naturkunde). The original description does not refer to any particular specimen, nor does it mention the number of specimens examined, and provides but a very imprecise

Bauer and Günther (1991) and Bauer (2000) gave more detailed information about the specimens on which this name was based. According to these sources,

(1823b) established this nomen based on specimens collected by Hemprich and Ehrenberg in

and

, some of which are still preserved in the Berlin museum. From these five remaining

. This specimen originates from

and was presented by Dr. J. Anderson. There is no additional information available supporting its identification as one of the original

. Even if this specimen were part of the original
<typeStatus id="54E30BFAFFA99D5FFF48CC04FED5FECA" box="[249,297,296,320]" pageId="2" pageNumber="367">type</typeStatus>
series, it would now have lost its status as name-bearing
<typeStatus id="54E30BFAFFA99D5FFC64CC04FBF9FECA" box="[981,1029,296,320]" pageId="2" pageNumber="367">type</typeStatus>
after the aforementioned
<typeStatus id="54E30BFAFFA99D5FFA84CC0BFA60FEB5" box="[1333,1436,295,319]" pageId="2" pageNumber="367" type="lectotype">lectotype</typeStatus>
designation.

According to Bauer (2000), however, the nomen was based on Hemprichs hand-written notes where he also detailed that the series of specimens that includes the

originated from “Tscheile” (=el Achterieh, now Al Dukhaylach

). Thus, one of these two localities currently constitutes the

locality.

: the snout profile is strongly convex and the nostrils do not project much (see Baha El Din 2006, which fully agrees with our own examination of a large series of specimens from North Africa, many of which genotyped by Metallinou
<emphasis id="B92C694AFFA89D5EFD80CC05FD91FECA" box="[561,621,296,320]" italics="true" pageId="3" pageNumber="368">et al.</emphasis>
2012). In addition, the localities where the
