Wheeler has entirely black legs, a yellow haltere, a matt brown mesonotum and a brownish microtomentose abdomen. It lacks the pair of pronounced facial setae typical for
<taxonomicName lsidName="S. despecta" pageId="0" pageNumber="4701" rank="species" species="despecta">S. despecta</taxonomicName>
(Haliday). The wing and mesonotal patterns of
<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Ephydridae" genus="Scatophila" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Scatophila iowana" order="Diptera" pageId="0" pageNumber="4701" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="iowana">Scatophila iowana</taxonomicName>
resemble those of
<taxonomicName lsidName="S. caviceps" pageId="0" pageNumber="4701" rank="species" species="caviceps">S. caviceps</taxonomicName>
(Stenhammar). Males of these two species can be identified by the shape of the central part of the face: somewhat protruding between well-defined antennal grooves in
<taxonomicName lsidName="S. iowana" pageId="0" pageNumber="4701" rank="species" species="iowana">S. iowana</taxonomicName>
, weakly concave and without antennal grooves in
<taxonomicName lsidName="S. caviceps" pageId="0" pageNumber="4701" rank="species" species="caviceps">S. caviceps</taxonomicName>

The anepisternum of
<taxonomicName lsidName="S. iowana" pageId="0" pageNumber="4701" rank="species" species="iowana">S. iowana</taxonomicName>
is rather uniformly brownish;
<taxonomicName lsidName="S. caviceps" pageId="0" pageNumber="4701" rank="species" species="caviceps">S. caviceps</taxonomicName>
has a grey anepisternum with two brown spots, one around the base of the anepisternal bristle and one at the ventral margin.

The male terminalia of
<taxonomicName lsidName="S. iowana" pageId="0" pageNumber="4701" rank="species" species="iowana">S. iowana</taxonomicName>
are characterized by the anterior margin of the epandrium, which is slightly concave, and the aedeagus, which consists of three sclerites. In
<taxonomicName lsidName="S. caviceps" pageId="0" pageNumber="4701" rank="species" species="caviceps">S. caviceps</taxonomicName>
the anterior margin of the epandrium bears a medial projection and the aedeagus is a one-piece structure.
