Head-body 25-33 cm, tail 16-23 cm; weight 300-400 g. A very small grizzled mongoose, with short, fine fur. The head and neck are black, grizzled with grayish-white; the back, legs, and tail are paler, being more brownish. The underparts are reddish or pale gray. The muzzle is not elongated and does not have a groove on the upperlip. The throat displays a prominent reverse “cow-lick” of fur. The claws are robust. Dental formula: 13/3, C1/1,P 3/3, M 2/2 = 36. The teeth are weak.

. Listed as Threatened in the [IUCN Action Plan for the Conservation of Mustelids and Viverrids (1989). This species is known from just 31 museum specimens and a handful of possible sightings; there have been no positive records for more than two decades. Field surveys, ecological studies, and assessments of any threats are urgently needed.
