The Melqartitermitidae are a peculiar Early Cretaceous group of primitive termites. Like
<taxonomicName authorityName="Desneux" authorityYear="1904" box="[136,320,410,436]" class="Insecta" family="Mastotermitidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Blattodea" pageId="6" pageNumber="380" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Mastotermitidae</taxonomicName>
and some other basal families, melqartitermitids have wholly pentamerous tarsi and a large flat pronotum. However, unlike
<taxonomicName authorityName="Desneux" authorityYear="1904" box="[594,778,482,508]" class="Insecta" family="Mastotermitidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Blattodea" pageId="6" pageNumber="380" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Mastotermitidae</taxonomicName>
the hind wing lacks an anal lobe and ocelli are lacking (absent in
<taxonomicName authorityName="Desneux" authorityYear="1904" box="[257,446,554,581]" class="Insecta" family="Termitidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Blattodea" pageId="6" pageNumber="380" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="subFamily" subFamily="Mastotermitinae">Mastotermitinae</taxonomicName>
). Unlike
<taxonomicName box="[549,756,554,580]" class="Insecta" family="Archotermopsidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Blattodea" pageId="6" pageNumber="380" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Archotermopsidae</taxonomicName>
a subsidiary tooth is present and the radial field is narrow, closer in form to that of
<taxonomicName authorityName="Holmgren" authorityYear="1910" box="[420,593,626,652]" class="Insecta" family="Stolotermitidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Blattodea" pageId="6" pageNumber="380" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Stolotermitidae</taxonomicName>
(but this family has tetramerous tarsi, lacks a subsidiary tooth, and has a smaller pronotum). Like
<taxonomicName authorityName="Desneux" authorityYear="1904" box="[467,651,698,724]" class="Insecta" family="Mastotermitidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Blattodea" pageId="6" pageNumber="380" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Mastotermitidae</taxonomicName>
and other early diverging families, Melqartitermitidae have a large forewing scale with all primary veins originating within the scale. Aside from its unique combination of traits, the family differs from others in the primitive retention of a ventral cervical sclerite. In this respect it resembles
