Until a recent systematic and taxonomic revision of the European minnows (genus
<taxonomicName box="[1276,1368,218,240]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Phoxinus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="124" pageNumber="127" phylum="Chordata" rank="genus">Phoxinus</taxonomicName>
), two species were thought to occur in the region sampled by Projet Lac.The species native and widespread in the northern perialpine region was thought to be the central European
<taxonomicName authority="phoxinus" box="[975,1165,282,304]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Phoxinus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="124" pageNumber="127" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="phoxinus">Phoxinus phoxinus</taxonomicName>
, and the species native and widespread in the region south of the Alps was thought to be
<taxonomicName baseAuthorityName="Schinz" baseAuthorityYear="1840" box="[944,1137,314,336]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Phoxinus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="124" pageNumber="127" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="lumaireul">Phoxinus lumaireul</taxonomicName>
. Five other species were known with small distributions in southeastern and southwestern Europe but none of these was thought to occur in the region around the Alps. In 2017, the
<taxonomicName box="[751,843,378,400]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Phoxinus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="124" pageNumber="127" phylum="Chordata" rank="genus">Phoxinus</taxonomicName>
from around Europe were investigated using molecular markers, resulting in a revision of known species and their distribution ranges and the restoration from synonymy and delineation of several additional species that had been considered synonyms of, mostly,
<taxonomicName box="[1269,1381,442,464]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Phoxinus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="124" pageNumber="127" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="phoxinus">P. phoxinus</taxonomicName>

. The only samples from Switzerland included in the study were from Lake Geneva and the Ticino. The Ticino sample was identified as
<taxonomicName baseAuthorityName="Schinz" baseAuthorityYear="1840" box="[584,695,506,528]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Phoxinus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="124" pageNumber="127" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="lumaireul">P. lumaireul</taxonomicName>
as expected. Surprisingly however, the Lake Geneva samples were identified as
<taxonomicName class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Phoxinus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="124" pageNumber="127" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="septimaniae">P. septimaniae</taxonomicName>
and
<taxonomicName authorityName="Hanko" authorityYear="1922" box="[577,646,538,560]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Phoxinus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="124" pageNumber="127" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="csikii">P. csikii</taxonomicName>
. The former was a known and valid species believed to be restricted to Mediterranean coastal streams in southern France
<superScript attach="right" box="[757,774,568,583]" fontSize="6" pageId="124" pageNumber="127">[9]</superScript>
. The latter is one of the species restored from synonymy, and otherwise having a wide distribution covering most of the southern and northern Danube basin. Prior to Projet Lac and the genetic analyses of the samples, it was therefore entirely unclear which
<taxonomicName box="[1119,1294,634,656]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Phoxinus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="124" pageNumber="127" phylum="Chordata" rank="species" species="undetermined">Phoxinus species</taxonomicName>
occurred in the other lakes of Switzerland north of the Alps.

<taxonomicName box="[457,549,730,752]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Phoxinus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="124" pageNumber="127" phylum="Chordata" rank="genus">Phoxinus</taxonomicName>
was not common in Projet Lac catches, despite being previously documented in most lakes across the northern perialpine region. Indeed, among the northern lakes,
<taxonomicName box="[1077,1169,762,784]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Phoxinus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="124" pageNumber="127" phylum="Chordata" rank="genus">Phoxinus</taxonomicName>
was recorded only in the cool and oligotrophic lakes Walen, Lucerne,Thun, Brienz, as well as in Neuchatel and Chalain. Additionally,
<taxonomicName box="[1379,1471,794,816]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Phoxinus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="124" pageNumber="127" phylum="Chordata" rank="genus">Phoxinus</taxonomicName>
were collected from lakes Sils (Danube catchment) and Poschaivo (Po catchment). Barcoding of
<taxonomicName box="[1321,1413,826,848]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Phoxinus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="124" pageNumber="127" phylum="Chordata" rank="genus">Phoxinus</taxonomicName>
collected from these lakes and from several streams sampled by Progetto Fiumi in all major catchments revealed the existence of four deeply divergent mitochondrial lineages of
<taxonomicName box="[953,1045,890,912]" class="Actinopterygii" family="Cyprinidae" genus="Phoxinus" kingdom="Animalia" order="Cypriniformes" pageId="124" pageNumber="127" phylum="Chordata" rank="genus">Phoxinus</taxonomicName>
that conform to three of the described and valid species plus one lineage that was defined by Palandačić et al

but remains undescribed.
