Classified as Data Deficient on The IUCN Red List. Dices Cottontail is poorly known, and little data are available on its population status, although it seems common in the Andean Paramos and highland forests of Panama and Costa Rica. Nevertheless, locals report that it was previously more common and had a larger distribution that extended to lower elevations that have been converted to cattle pasture and agricultural land. Dices Cottontail is probably endangered due to its small distribution, invasive predators such as Coyotes (Canis latrans) that follow cattle, human-caused fire, and habitat loss due to forest logging for pasture. Nevertheless, the entire distribution of Dices Cottontail is within protected areas. Studies on its distribution, population status, conservation threats, biology, and ecology are urgent priorities.
