The specific name is a Latin adjective (
<emphasis id="B953AD0C055DFFF6341D5B63FC79F817" italics="true" pageId="1" pageNumber="256">japonicus, -a, -um</emphasis>
) derived from the occurrence of the new species in
<collectingCountry id="F330318E055DFFF632FE5BA3FC7DF837" box="[927,986,1955,1978]" name="Japan" pageId="1" pageNumber="256">Japan</collectingCountry>
. The Japanese name for the new genus and species is derived from “Nue” (a Japanese legendary monster with the face of a monkey, the body of a raccoon dog, the limbs of a tiger, and the front half of a snake for a tail) and “hiramushi” (polyclad flatworm) in the Japanese language.
