Bracteoles paired, reduced, persistent or caducous. Flowers creamy-white to reddish-pink. Calyx lobes 4, free, persistent or caducous. Petals coherent into a calyptra or free [exotic species in region]. Stamens usually numerous, conspicuous, filaments free. Ovary 2-locular, placentation axile, ovules few to many per locule, style simple. Fruit a fleshy or dry berry. Seeds globular.</paragraph>
