Earlier records are based on the original description of Michael (1885 and 1888), or on information in Willmann (1931), Sellnick (1960) or Ghilarov & Krivolutsky (1975), none of which is sufficient for modern taxonomy. All of these references report the species to be monodactylous. However, Luxton (1987) re-described the type as heterotridactylous; he reported the number of notogastal setae as 12 pairs, erroneously, instead of the correct number of 10 pairs.
