is composed of three species. Specimens were collected beating trees and in moss hanging from trees, they also have a distinctive colour pattern with arrow markings on the dorsal surface of the abdomen (Fig. 27) and patterned legs that could function as camouFage in moss and trees.

have very well developed chelicerae, sometimes with a very large tooth (

), and the males legs III are extremely long, two to three times the length of the body. Females also have legs III longer than the others, but not as exceptionally long as in the male. This could be a predatory adaptation for hunting and running, as they are known to be cursorial hunting spiders (Jocqué &amp; Dippenaar-Schoeman 2006). An interesting morphological characteristic of

, is that both males and females have uneven numbers of teeth on the tarsal claws of legs IIV; the prolateral tarsal claw always have more teeth than the retrolateral one.

There are few spider biodiversity studies in neotropical premontane, low evergreen and cloud forest. A few spider biodiversity assessments have been done in cloud forests, namely in Mexico (Maya-Morales
<emphasis id="49C4820D0733FB28FF06792D8BCBC419" box="[189,246,1625,1651]" italics="true" pageId="45" pageNumber="46">et al.</emphasis>
2012) and Costa Rica (Yanoviak
<emphasis id="49C4820D0733FB28FDCC792D898DC419" box="[631,688,1625,1651]" italics="true" pageId="45" pageNumber="46">et al.</emphasis>
2003; Peckmezian 2009), but never in Ecuador. In their study of a tropical montane cloud forest of Mexico, Maya-Morales
<emphasis id="49C4820D0733FB28FC35790A88F4C4FC" box="[910,969,1660,1686]" italics="true" pageId="45" pageNumber="46">et al.</emphasis>
(2012) collected 1208 adult spiders, representing 112 morphospecies and 22 families. Yanoviak
<emphasis id="49C4820D0733FB28FC2B79D788F3C4D0" box="[912,974,1696,1722]" italics="true" pageId="45" pageNumber="46">et al.</emphasis>
(2003) and Peckmezian (2009), in their study of Costa Rican cloud forest, reported collecting
<specimenCount id="6DB695960733FB28FCCF79B488DFC4B7" box="[884,994,1731,1757]" pageId="45" pageNumber="46" type="adult">298 adult</specimenCount>
spider specimens, representing 86 morphospecies, while Peckmezian collected
<specimenCount id="6DB695960733FB28FD6A7991887CC56A" box="[721,833,1766,1792]" pageId="45" pageNumber="46" type="adult">406 adult</specimenCount>
spiders, representing 73 morphospecies and 15 families. Our biodiversity study is, by far, the most exhaustive spider biodiversity assessment ever done in premontane, low evergreen and cloud forest of the Chocó region of Ecuador. A total of 5482 adult spiders was collected, representing 248 morphospecies distributed over 37 families. The most diverse family collected was the
<taxonomicName id="BCB0259C0733FB28FE517804894CC5E7" box="[490,625,1907,1933]" class="Arachnida" family="Theridiidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Araneae" pageId="45" pageNumber="46" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Theridiidae</taxonomicName>
family (32 morphospecies), making up ~13% of the total spider diversity collected. The most diverse families were: the
<taxonomicName id="BCB0259C0733FB28FCF078E188F1C5DA" box="[843,972,1942,1968]" class="Arachnida" family="Oonopidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Araneae" pageId="45" pageNumber="46" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Oonopidae</taxonomicName>
(23 morphospecies),
<taxonomicName id="BCB0259C0733FB28FB7278E18E4AC5DA" box="[1225,1399,1942,1968]" class="Arachnida" family="Tetragnathidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Araneae" pageId="45" pageNumber="46" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Tetragnathidae</taxonomicName>
(22 morphospecies),

(22 morphospecies),

(19 morphospecies) and
<taxonomicName id="BCB0259C0733FB28FAB878CE8E4AC5B9" box="[1283,1399,1977,2003]" class="Arachnida" family="Salticidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Araneae" pageId="45" pageNumber="46" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Salticidae</taxonomicName>
(15 morphospecies) each representing ~10% of the fauna. All the remaining families ranged between 1 and 5%. Anyphaenidae was the Ffth most diverse family found in the Chocó forests of Ecuador. Abundance wise, the family
<taxonomicName id="BCB0259C0730FB2BFDA57E2589A2C306" box="[542,671,338,364]" class="Arachnida" family="Oonopidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Araneae" pageId="46" pageNumber="47" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Oonopidae</taxonomicName>
was the most abundant (27%), followed by the
<taxonomicName id="BCB0259C0730FB2BFB4C7E258E4BC306" box="[1271,1398,338,364]" class="Arachnida" family="Zodariidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Araneae" pageId="46" pageNumber="47" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Zodariidae</taxonomicName>
(14%) and the remaining families counted for less than 10% of the total abundance. If we only look at the abundance of arboreal spiders collected, then the family
<taxonomicName id="BCB0259C0730FB2BFC0C7EEF8F03C3D8" box="[951,1086,408,434]" class="Arachnida" family="Theridiidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Araneae" pageId="46" pageNumber="47" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Theridiidae</taxonomicName>
is the most abundant one (23%), followed by the
<taxonomicName id="BCB0259C0730FB2BFE747ECC8945C3BF" box="[463,632,443,469]" class="Arachnida" family="Anyphaenidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Araneae" pageId="46" pageNumber="47" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Anyphaenidae</taxonomicName>
(14%),
<taxonomicName id="BCB0259C0730FB2BFD6F7ECC8870C3BF" box="[724,845,443,469]" class="Arachnida" family="Araneidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Araneae" pageId="46" pageNumber="47" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Araneidae</taxonomicName>
(13%) and
<taxonomicName id="BCB0259C0730FB2BFC697ECC8FBDC3BF" box="[978,1152,443,469]" class="Arachnida" family="Tetragnathidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Araneae" pageId="46" pageNumber="47" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Tetragnathidae</taxonomicName>
(12%), which makes the
<taxonomicName id="BCB0259C0730FB2BFF5C7EA98AADC392" box="[231,400,478,504]" class="Arachnida" family="Anyphaenidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Araneae" pageId="46" pageNumber="47" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="family">Anyphaenidae</taxonomicName>
the second most abundant family found in the arboreal habitat. Compared to similar studies, Maya-Morales
<emphasis id="49C4820D0730FB2BFE697D748933C076" box="[466,526,514,540]" italics="true" pageId="46" pageNumber="47">et al.</emphasis>
(2012) showed that in the understory of remnant tropical montane forests of Mexico, the four most abundant families were the
