We provide strong evidence for the first unisexual species belonging to the large lizard clade Pleurodonta, extending the occurrence of this rare cytogenetic and reproductive anomaly among vertebrates generally, and for squamate reptiles specifically. Although the mechanism of unisexual reproduction in this species remains to be determined, all known unisexual reptiles species are apparently parthenogenetic (meiotically unreduced ova developed in the absence of sperm) with no records of gynogenesis (sperm-dependent unisexuality) or hybridogenesis (
