is easily distinguished from all other species of the genus in northeastern North America except

by the combin

of: punctures of the elytra dense, separated by their widths or less; size large (at least 6.0mm from clypeus to abdominal apex); the area between the basal lines of tergites two and three punctate. From

it is most easily separated by the shape of the pronotum which is narrowed anteriorly in

This species is transcontinental in northern North America and was previously known from Alaska, Manitoba, Minnesota, and

). Herein we newly record
<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Staphylinidae" genus="Gabrius" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Gabrius vindex" order="Coleoptera" pageId="18" pageNumber="47" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="vindex">Gabrius vindex</taxonomicName>
from Ontario (Map 26), representing the only known localities in northeastern North America other than the Gatineau area of
<normalizedToken originalValue="Québec">Quebec</normalizedToken>
. All known specimens of
<taxonomicName class="Insecta" family="Staphylinidae" genus="Gabrius" higherTaxonomySource="CoL" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName="Gabrius vindex" order="Coleoptera" pageId="18" pageNumber="47" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="vindex">Gabrius vindex</taxonomicName>
have been collected in debris adjacent to the
<normalizedToken originalValue="waters">water's</normalizedToken>
edge, and
<bibRefCitation author="Smetana, A" journalOrPublisher="Classification, phylogeny and taxonomic revision. Memoirs on Entomology, International" pageId="27" pageNumber="56" title="Rove beetles of the subtribe Philonthina of America north of Mexico (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae)" volume="3" year="1995">Smetana (1995)</bibRefCitation>
suggested that beaver lodges provide ideal conditions for this species. The Ontario specimens and the 92 DEBU specimens from beaver lodges in the Gatineau area of
<normalizedToken originalValue="Québec">Quebec</normalizedToken>
strongly support this.
