This species is named in honor of Elena Hilario, an ardent supporter of Coleopterists both near and far. Both authors greatly appreciate her encouragement and support. The first author specifically recognizes the pleasure of Hilarios company during an extended visitation to
<collectingCountry id="F31A7612FFFDFFC26DFF4DA172ADF95D" box="[749,898,1735,1761]" name="New Zealand" pageId="35" pageNumber="36">New Zealand</collectingCountry>
during which major progress on this project was accomplished.

This species is separated from congeners by the shining, black integument without secondary pubescence on the pronotum or elytra, the darkened scape and remaining antennomeres testaceous, the shape of the metatibiae, and the unmodified antennae of males.
