Small sized phlaeothripines. Dorsal surface usually strongly sculptured, wings usually fully developed, rarely reduced. Head 1.01.3 times as long as wide; postocular setae usually arise behind inner margin of eyes, usually short, stout and strongly expanded at apex; maxillary stylets retracted far into head capsule, reaching eyes, close together medially; mouth cone pointed. Antennae eight-segmented, segments VII and VIII closely joined or not; segment III with two (1 + 1) or three (1 + 2) sensoria, segment IV usually with four sensoria, but sometimes with only two or three. Pronotum usually strongly sculptured with lines of reticles or rows of small tubercles, but sometimes weakly sculptured; notopleural sutures usually complete; basantra present or absent. Fore tarsal tooth present or absent. Fore wings, if fully developed, weakly constricted medially, with duplicated cilia. Pelta usually hat-shaped in macropterae. Abdominal tergites IIVII with two pairs of sigmoid wing-retaining setae in macropterae, posterior pair of these setae often enlarged on tergites III to VI, tergite VIII often with additional a pair of short and simply curved wing-retaining setae; tergites IIVII usually transversely reticulate or striate laterally, tergite II with dentate microtrichia along striae, tergites IIIVIII with dentate or ciliate microtrichia along striae; S1 setae on tergite IX expanded at apex; S2 on IX in female usually expanded, but sometimes pointed, in male usually pointed, but sometimes expanded; tube shorter than head; anal setae usually longer than tube, but sometimes shorter. Sternite VIII of male with large pore plate, usually banded, but sometimes interrupted medially.
