Ovicells vary in the degree of immersion in the frontal shield of the distal zooid, some being recumbent (resting upon the surface) with others subimmersed or fully immersed. The form of cormidial secondary calcification may also vary—some species have Y-shaped suture lines, indicating contributions from three adjacent zooids.
