Identification to species level follows

based on the following characters: three rows of lateral plates on the caudal peduncle; bar-shaped opercle; snout plates present; lateral plates not keeled;> 30 teeth per jaw ramus; body and fins (except dorsal and caudal) dark with small pale dots; plates not outlined with dark pigment; and caudal fin with darker lower lobe. We note that the whisker-like odontodes characteristic of the genus were not apparent in our juvenile specimens, but we did observe bifurcating tentacules on the interopercular plate, and combined with the other characters, are confident that the specimens belong to
