I. THE GENUS

The genus was separated from

C. L. Koch, 1836 on the basis of two Kulijev's species, designating
<taxonomicName id="B46CA727F5761D5B78F5BD8FE76140B8" class="Arachnida" family="Carabodidae" genus="Carabodes" genus.bestMatchDistance="338" genus.bestMatchVote="2" genus.innerRound="1" genus.outerRound="1" kingdom="Animalia" order="Sarcoptiformes" pageId="0" pageNumber="399" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="dubius">C. dubius</taxonomicName>
Kulijev, 1968 as the type of the genus.

<paragraph id="DD878D7892D1CABCC15C60F01838E1B9" pageId="0" pageNumber="399">Kulijev (1977: 64) emphasized in his differential diagnosis three main characters:</paragraph>
<paragraph id="95E5484605567F105F8A3B349FAB8AD4" pageId="0" pageNumber="399">1. Shoulder with a sharp anterior projection emerging before the dorsosejugal suture.</paragraph>
<paragraph id="14540445E8480CBAD0A6601DA1C130C1" pageId="0" pageNumber="399">2. Setae c2 directed forwards, setiform, over twice longer than the others.</paragraph>
<paragraph id="9E940F5BDE64321B28AD86A8756B047E" pageId="0" pageNumber="399">3. Trochanter and femur strongly dilated.</paragraph>

<paragraph id="A711DE5EA8C1C7A5767078889210C805" pageId="0" pageNumber="399">Since I had not examined the type-series I accepted Kulijev's opinion, but I remarked (Mahunka 1986: 92) that the most important character for this taxon is the position of the adanal lyrifissure. Of these four characters in my key for the Carabodid genera I used only the direction of setae c2 and the position of the lyrifissure as distinguishing features.</paragraph>

Meanwhile I have examined the value and the applicability of these and other characters within the family

, and I have found that the

of the shoulder and that of the trochanters or the femora III and IV is highly variable also in the other species of the genus

or in other genera, e.g.

. The direction of the anterior setae of the notogaster c2 and la is also varying, and the setae directed forwards are known in some other genera, too. On this basis the status of the genus

is highly uncertain, therefore, the revision of this genus is necessary. I have found some specimens of a species collected in the Caucasus (Soviet Union) which well correspond the description with of
<taxonomicName id="4F70FF8C2E93CE90472D61A851540047" class="Arachnida" family="Carabodidae" genus="Carabodes" kingdom="Animalia" order="Sarcoptiformes" pageId="0" pageNumber="399" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="dubius">Carabodes (Flexa) dubius Kulijev</taxonomicName>
, 1968, I give the redescription of the species hereunder, and propose to outline my points of view concerning the genus

. On the basis of above discussion I establish that the genus
