Body of small to medium size for the family, 0.5–10.0 cm total length. Shell thin to very thin, from strongly calcified to membranaceus; ear shaped, low to high spire, with expanded aperture; smooth or weakly sculptured by axial growth lines; completely enclosed by the mantle or with a small dorsal fissure. Periostracum thin to not visible.
