—Valves lanceolate, often with capitate ends, often curved along the transapical axis. Sternum lanceolate. Internal covers of the rimoportulae are asymmetrical. One rimoportula toward each end. Distinguished from similar genera by areolae which form a decussate pattern externally. Apical pore fields very shallow, sometimes not obviously sunken (not forming an ocellulimbus) at all. Valves bilayered, with the internal layer hyaline but for a single pore between each pair of virgae, the pore located at the junction of the face and mantle.
