species are ambiguous and open to interpretation. Only the number of prelabral chaeta is easy to see, discrete, and with insignificant levels of intraspecific variation. As discussed above, under light microscopy it is often difficult to determine the actual number of eyes present, although at least the 23 largest eyes are almost always visible. Hence, the key refers only to eyes present or absent.
