recorded two specimens of the species from southern

specimens tended to have more segmented anal-fin rays, more anterior lateral-line scales, more scales in lateral series, and fewer scales between lateral lines than those from
<collectingCountry id="5DB2128AFFEC5B7BFD20FE156B7BFDB7" box="[713,790,502,526]" name="Kenya" pageId="10" pageNumber="11">Kenya</collectingCountry>
. These differences were confirmed by Gill (2004: table 8) based on six additional specimens from southern
<collectingCountry id="5DB2128AFFEC5B7BFD23FDFA6B7FFD88" box="[714,786,537,561]" name="Oman" pageId="10" pageNumber="11">Oman</collectingCountry>
. He noted “the possibility that this variation is worthy of separate species status must await the analysis of specimens from intermediate areas” (Gill 2004: 130). We record the species from the
<collectingCountry id="5DB2128AFFEC5B7BFE6AFD8269B4FDC0" box="[387,473,609,633]" name="Yemen" pageId="10" pageNumber="11">Socotra</collectingCountry>
Archipelago on the basis of
<specimenCount id="33A39993FFEC5B7BFCC9FD826BD7FDC0" box="[800,954,609,633]" pageId="10" pageNumber="11" type="generic">20 specimens</specimenCount>
from the west and south coasts of
<collectingCountry id="5DB2128AFFEC5B7BFAAEFD826DF1FDC0" box="[1351,1436,609,633]" name="Yemen" pageId="10" pageNumber="11">Socotra</collectingCountry>
Island. With the exception of one character (scales between lateral lines), counts for the specimens are intermediate between the
<collectingCountry id="5DB2128AFFEC5B7BFEC3FD4A691BFD78" box="[298,374,681,705]" name="Oman" pageId="10" pageNumber="11">Omani</collectingCountry>
specimens to the north and the
<collectingCountry id="5DB2128AFFEC5B7BFD07FD496B28FD7B" box="[750,837,682,706]" name="Kenya" pageId="10" pageNumber="11">Kenyan</collectingCountry>
specimens to the south (Table 3), and we therefore argue for the continued recognition of a single species.

Island coast and also once each from the north coast of Abd al-Kuri
<collectingCountry id="5DB2128AFFEC5B7BFD55FCF66B6CFC94" box="[700,769,789,813]" name="Iceland" pageId="10" pageNumber="11">Island</collectingCountry>
and the north-east coast of Semha Island. It was recently recorded again from the west coast (Ras Bidou) and south coast (off Steroh village) of
<collectingCountry id="5DB2128AFFEC5B7BFBB2FCDA6CDDFCE8" box="[1115,1200,825,849]" name="Yemen" pageId="10" pageNumber="11">Socotra</collectingCountry>
Island (H. Pulch and T. Alpermann, pers. comm.). The species thus occurs thoughout the entire island group, with a relatively wide ecological niche ranging from filter feeder communities on highly dynamic bedrock and relict spur and groove habitat, over mixed macroalgae-dominated communities on rock platform with sparse hard corals of the south coast (for which it appears to have a preference on
<collectingCountry id="5DB2128AFFEC5B7BFD84FC2A6AAAFC58" box="[621,711,969,993]" name="Yemen" pageId="10" pageNumber="11">Socotra</collectingCountry>
), to occasionally massive coral communities (

Springer in live coloration, and suggested that the two may be involved in a mimetic relationship. The latter species is unknown from
