). While cautiously manipulating captured specimens, the author was able to make some interesting observations on its defensive snapping behaviour. The shrimps are able to produce a clearly audible snapping sound with both of their chelipeds. The sound is produced by the rapid closure of the dactylus, with its bulging part expelling water from the shallow fossa on the opposed margin of the pollex, although it remains presently unknown whether any cavitation phenomena are involved in this
