have sexually dimorphic flagellomeres. Edwardss (1938: fig. 7c) illustration of a flagellomere of the
<typeStatus id="FA06B4999D141C44333B19DFFE41FA0D" box="[369,417,1410,1434]" pageId="13" pageNumber="288">type</typeStatus>
male shows an ovoid node without crenulate whorl but, in Edwardss words, with “a sparse median whorl of long spreading dark hairs”. This is the condition found in female
<taxonomicName id="E2BD71B89D141C44367619F8FAF3FA29" box="[1084,1299,1445,1470]" class="Insecta" family="Cecidomyiidae" genus="Groveriella" kingdom="Animalia" order="Diptera" pageId="13" pageNumber="288" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="baltica">

: fig. 41a). The only explanation I have for this situation is that the specimen depicted by Edwards was an intersex, with female antennae and male genitalia. In my experience, intersexual individuals of
<taxonomicName id="E2BD71B89D141C44338A1A68FDB7F9D9" box="[448,599,1589,1614]" class="Insecta" family="Cecidomyiidae" kingdom="Animalia" order="Diptera" pageId="13" pageNumber="288" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="subFamily" subFamily="Micromyinae">Micromyinae</taxonomicName>
are common enough as to take such a possibility into consideration. The only other male previously thought to be
<taxonomicName id="E2BD71B89D141C4430331A07FCF1F9E5" box="[633,785,1625,1650]" class="Insecta" family="Cecidomyiidae" genus="Strobliella" kingdom="Animalia" order="Diptera" pageId="13" pageNumber="288" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="intermedia">

</taxonomicName>
is from Alaska (see

: fig. 41cd), but my study of the three European males reported here makes me wonder whether the Alaskan male could be a different species (see the differential diagnosis below). The antennae of the Nearctic specimen are incomplete and collapsed, so are useless for assessing the exact structure of the flagellomeres (see

, with 2122 flagellomeres, a single-branched M1+2, and M4 waning basally. Specific to this species, the generally subtrapezoid tegmen has distinct shoulders subapically, with the portion distad of the shoulders weakly sclerotized and bilobed, despite the apparently not absolutely stable outline (
