Workers and females:

ants with the following diagnostic characters:

<paragraph id="C1860F6186B8A72081561AA2BBF3662D" pageId="16" pageNumber="1473" type="mainText">1. Petiole squamiform, the anterior and the posterior surface laterally confluent.</paragraph>
<paragraph id="B7CE3ADBF60EE827D5E2D4845EE9FCF5" pageId="16" pageNumber="1473" type="mainText">2. MPI &lt;85; third maxillary palp segment compressed in cross-section, with long erect hairs along the margins and the outer surface, forming a part of the psammophore.</paragraph>
<paragraph id="E699184F213BEFFB18E60E8559D517DA" pageId="16" pageNumber="1473" type="mainText">3. Uniform brownish or yellowish, sometimes rather dark and with a gaster darker than the remaining body parts; a thick, long pubescence causes the silvery appearance of the ants.</paragraph>

<paragraph id="DE913280D480AD30F9FB7EA9BB9748AD" pageId="17" pageNumber="1474" type="mainText">2. Subgenital plate short (SPI &lt;125); with two distal lateral depressed processes and a median part which is variable only a cleft or a third but much shorter process (Fig. 16).</paragraph>
<paragraph id="C42E0B4E9C8369B990E881AE6B6235B8" pageId="17" pageNumber="1474" type="mainText">3. Squamula and stipes caudally almost confluent (Fig. 31).</paragraph>

The

species-group is distributed from western Morocco to the Sinai peninsula, at least following the northern side of the Sahara up to Sinai and down to Saudi Arabia. This species group includes the ants living in the most arid habitats, between the sand dunes of the deserts where Aristida spp. occur. This group is an ecological equivalent to

from the Kara Kumy of Turkmeniya.

The species of the
<taxonomicName id="14E107CE81B9DC7D421D96C904F20ABB" baseAuthorityName="Roger" baseAuthorityYear="1859" class="Insecta" family="Formicidae" genus="Cataglyphis" kingdom="Animalia" order="Hymenoptera" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="bombycinus">bombycinus</taxonomicName>
species-group show the most elaborate dimorphism within
<taxonomicName id="2AFC34403644C1B2D5F1B20008EB46DE" class="Insecta" family="Formicidae" genus="Cataglyphis" kingdom="Animalia" order="Hymenoptera" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="genus">Cataglyphis</taxonomicName>
and a unique biology. Although they are individual foragers, they tend to leave the nest in groups soon after dawn and before dusk, and are rarely seen foraging in the heat of the day (Wehner, personal communication). The

species-group includes two species-complexes:

complex: diagnosed by the male genitalia with a trilobed subgenital plate (Fig. 16), the presence of a median appendix of the stipes which is not separated basally by a carinae, and large (AL&gt; 5 mm) dimorphic workers with a soldier caste with falcate mandibles (Fig. 5) and workers with always six or more teeth on the mandible. The worker castes are characterized by an astonishingly high variation in coloration and the whole

with workers with a thick, silvery pubescence on the gaster and

with a sparse pubescence with hairs shorter than the distance between them. Distribution: deserts of North Africa and Sinai.

complex: diagnosed by the truncated lateral appendices of the subgential plate, a large, simple, median appendix of the stipes of about half the length of the stipes and smaller, monomorphic, workers (AL &lt;2-5 mm), with sometimes small teeth on the mandibles which have almost been reduced to five teeth. The complex includes one species (

) and a second species has to be described (CCAC). Further analysis is needed to prove whether the
<taxonomicName id="F0BC78D45DF882BEFC43E623FD6F6576" authorityName="Kugler" authorityYear="1981" class="Insecta" family="Formicidae" genus="Cataglyphis" kingdom="Animalia" order="Hymenoptera" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="sabulosus">sabulosus</taxonomicName>
complex is the sister group of the
<taxonomicName id="A6E642E62DCE829CE8292DBB57E77963" baseAuthorityName="Roger" baseAuthorityYear="1859" class="Insecta" family="Formicidae" genus="Cataglyphis" kingdom="Animalia" order="Hymenoptera" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="bombycinus">bombycinus</taxonomicName>
complex or of the
<taxonomicName id="F94BE347282CC9E7AD3D709AF6CF2224" authorityName="Forel" authorityYear="1909" class="Insecta" family="Formicidae" genus="Formica" higherTaxonomySource="GBIF,CoL" kingdom="Animalia" order="Hymenoptera" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="emmae">emmae</taxonomicName>
complex, with which it shares the long median appendix of the stipes and the truncated subgenital plate. Distribution: Sinai, Oman.
