These are hyperactive, thermophilic, ground-nesting ants, with two species (

and
<taxonomicName id="CF8882DAECB2B02D55934C901A2AE748" LSID-HNS="urn:lsid:biosci.ohio-state.edu:osuc_concepts:29041" class="Insecta" family="Formicidae" genus="Forelius" kingdom="Animalia" lsidName-HNS="Forelius pruinosus (Roger)" order="Hymenoptera" pageNumber="26" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="pruinosus">F. pruinosus</taxonomicName>
) in California. Colonies are polygynous, and the workers have conspicuous foraging trails. Some nest series consist of individuals phenotypically intermediate between
