The narrow cylindrical inflorescences, the small leaflets, and the presence of rachis glands indicate that
<taxonomicName class="Magnoliopsida" family="Fabaceae" genus="Acacia" kingdom="Plantae" order="Fabales" pageId="20" pageNumber="137" phylum="Tracheophyta" rank="species" species="hindsii">A. hindsii</taxonomicName>
is the ant-acacia parent, while the enlarged, flattened stipular spines suggest that
<taxonomicName class="Magnoliopsida" family="Fabaceae" genus="Acacia" kingdom="Plantae" order="Fabales" pageId="20" pageNumber="137" phylum="Tracheophyta" rank="species" species="cochliacantha">A. cochliacantha</taxonomicName>
is the non-ant-acacia parent. In many of its characteristics this hybrid is intermediate between the parents. The large, compressed stipular spines are similar to those of
<taxonomicName class="Magnoliopsida" family="Fabaceae" genus="Acacia" kingdom="Plantae" order="Fabales" pageId="20" pageNumber="137" phylum="Tracheophyta" rank="species" species="cochliacantha">A. cochliacantha</taxonomicName>
, although these spines are not spoon-shaped as in typical
<taxonomicName class="Magnoliopsida" family="Fabaceae" genus="Acacia" kingdom="Plantae" order="Fabales" pageId="20" pageNumber="137" phylum="Tracheophyta" rank="species" species="cochliacantha">A. cochliacantha</taxonomicName>
. No specimens were found on which the spines exhibited the characteristic entrance holes made by acacia-ants. Overall, the leaves are similar to those of
<taxonomicName class="Magnoliopsida" family="Fabaceae" genus="Acacia" kingdom="Plantae" order="Fabales" pageId="20" pageNumber="137" phylum="Tracheophyta" rank="species" species="cochliacantha">A. cochliacantha</taxonomicName>
in that they are relatively short and narrow. The leaflets, however, are similar to those of
<taxonomicName class="Magnoliopsida" family="Fabaceae" genus="Acacia" kingdom="Plantae" order="Fabales" pageId="20" pageNumber="137" phylum="Tracheophyta" rank="species" species="hindsii">A. hindsii</taxonomicName>
, being 3.0-
