A) is much shorter and has a terminal, dorsal tooth; the antennal scale is shorter and wider than in the

The specimen from

shows a much greater resemblance to the

D), with both the dorsal and ventral lamina of the rostrum exhibiting the typical form for the species. A further pronounced difference between both specimens is the colour pattern (see below). However, a comparison of the mitochondrial barcoding gene COI (627 bp) between the Kumejima and
<collectingCountry id="F3323696F353FF843BD97C89AF32FC04" box="[735,827,935,958]" name="Vanuatu" pageId="2" pageNumber="97">Vanuatu</collectingCountry>
specimens shows an identical sequence (GenBank accession nos.
<accessionNumber id="9476EBE5F353FF8438477CE4ADBDFC58" box="[321,436,970,994]" httpUri="https://www.ebi.ac.uk/ena/browser/api/embl/JN251749" pageId="2" pageNumber="97">JN251749</accessionNumber>
and

, respectively); suggesting that both forms are conspecific. The presently observed differences in morphology and colour patterns are clearly not related to sexual dimorphism, as the male specimen from
<collectingCountry id="F3323696F353FF8438407B3DADABFB90" box="[326,418,1043,1066]" name="Vanuatu" pageId="2" pageNumber="97">Vanuatu</collectingCountry>
resembles the female
<typeStatus id="549EC8A4F353FF843BA67B3CAF0BFB90" box="[672,770,1042,1066]" pageId="2" pageNumber="97" type="holotype">holotype</typeStatus>
more than the female collected in Kumejima. It is also not likely to be size-related, as both specimens are not overly dissimilar in carapace length.
